Around the Pac-10: Week 4

Alright, time for me to get back on schedule with the blog.  This was about the best week possible for the Pac-10 from a national perspective.   I’ll take a look at the conference games first:

Oregon -42 Arizona State- 31

So, is Oregon not quite as dominant as they looked in the first 3 games?  Or is Arizona State actually a good team?  The easiest answer is a little bit of both.  The Oregon defense was torn apart and Arizona State’s defense played pretty well against the Ducks amazing run game.  If the Sun Devils hadn’t committed 7 turnovers who knows what would have happened.  Take into account that it was 100 degrees and this score seems a little more reasonable.  Still, the feeling after this game is that Oregon might not be as far ahead of the Pac-10 as we thought.

Arizona – 10 Cal -9

This is weird.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch any of these games, I’ve only read about them but this is pretty far from the prediction I had for this game.  After getting torn apart by Nevada, I thought California wouldn’t be able to keep up with Arizona’s offense.  They did.  The Wildcats needed a late touchdown to win this one and Cal seemed in control most of the game.  Arizona’s defense is obviously good but their offense can’t disappear like this if they want to win the Pac.  When they’re at their best, the Wildcats could win the conference but when they aren’t, they’re just an average team.  Give credit to the Cal defense for playing so well.  Kevin Riley needs to be a lot better if they want to have a chance to contend.  But, Kevin Riley isn’t very good so that probably won’t happen.

USC – 50 WSU -16

While the other two games weren’t what I expected, this was exactly what I expected.  The Cougars scored first and passed pretty well against a questionable Trojan secondary but they never really stood a chance.  Matt Barkley made a few questionable decisions in the first half, throwing two interceptions.  He went on to say after the game that if they hadn’t committed 3 turnovers they would have scored 70.  Good observation, Matt.  Running back, Marc Tyler, told a reporter he could have run through the holes that the offensive line was making.  To complete the awesome quotes, WSU receiver, Jeffrey Solomon, said, “We’re so close to being good, it’s not even funny.”  This is my favorite quote of the year.  I wish I would have started Stanley Havili on my fantasy team this game, as he was the Trojan’s leading rusher and receiver.  Lane Kiffen lives to make me mad.

Now, the non-conference games:

UCLA – 34 Texas -12

Well, I thought Texas was overrated but I also thought UCLA was just pretty bad.  Credit the Bruins, they have really turned things around since getting drilled by Stanford.  Beating a national power like Texas at Texas is a huge achievement.  UCLA didn’t look great in the first half, only picking up 77 yards but they took control in the 2nd and were never close to losing this game.  Their defense is really starting to play well.  Now, we get to see if they can sustain this success or not.  Maybe the Pac-10 is really that much better than the Big-12.  That’s what I like to think, but Nebraska showed me otherwise.

Oregon State – 24 Boise St – 37

I’m starting to believe the Bronco hype.  This is the first year where I think they could actually challenge for the Pac-10 title.  The poor Beavers will learn that they shouldn’t schedule two teams that are in the top-10, on the road, for their non-conference schedule.  So, the Beavers aren’t an extremely elite team but they’re still dangerous.  They played TCU and Boise close and are the best 1-2 team in the country.  I don’t think that’s enough to challenge for the top of the Pac though.

Stanford – 37 Notre Dame -14

Yes, the Irish aren’t that great but Stanford looks fantastic.  We knew the Cardinal had a lot of potential but it looks like they may be even better than what we expected.  They are so physical and fundamentally sound that it just makes it tough to foresee a future letdown.  With that being said, they haven’t been tested like they will be this week against Oregon.  They dominated yesterday and look to ride that momentum into an early season showdown.

Next Week:

UCLA @ WSU
Arizona State @ Oregon State
UW @ USC
Stanford @ Oregon

Wow, those are some really interesting games.  Someone should write to the Pac-10 and tell them not to have the Stanford-Oregon game at the same time as UW-USC.  Because, I know that would do a lot of good to write to them…  Power rankings after the jump.  Continue reading

Felix will win the Cy Young

So Felix Hernandez goes 8 innings, gives up 2 hits, one run, a HR to league leader Jose Bautista. No shame in that. Problem is the Mariners continue their epic fail of a season and score exactly zero runs for Felix, yet again. I have never heard of a pitcher who gets less support from his teammates. The man continually goes out there week after week, throws quality game after quality game, never complains except when they pull him early, and plays with fire and intensity. Felix is my hero.

Will he win the Cy Young? He will. I guarantee it. The sympathy vote. Enough national writers know about how terrible the Mariners offense is, today was a prime example. If Felix plays for the Yankess he has 23 wins right now, maybe more, and is literally the king of NYC. It’s impressive how he can get himself up for games that mean nothing and considering the Mariners have been playing meaningless games since April, it’s amazing. Statistically it’s an easy choice, the win-loss record that may be his downfall, but pitchers have almost no control over that. Every category he has control over he is dominating.

Could Seattle be home to a Cy Young winner with a sub .500 record, and an NFL division winner with the same? Could happen. Only in Seattle.

The Overload

It finally happened.  For 8 months I had written through the few good times and the numerous down times for my sports teams.  I had held on to glimmers of hope and was a loyal fan.  But, this weekend I suffered Sports Overload.

On Friday, Felix pitched one of the best games of his career.  I had planned on going to the game with some friends, but it didn’t work out so I went to dinner with my family instead.  I almost missed Felix’s no-hitter.  I make a point of not trying to miss a Felix start, but the one I did he almost threw a no-hitter.  Of course, I was happy for the King.  He’s my favorite player in baseball and I’m happy to see him do well.  But, I should have known that missing this start would be a bad omen for the rest of the weekend.

We know what happened Saturday and Sunday.  The Huskies and Seahawks each laid an egg, the Huskies more so than the Seahawks.  There isn’t much point in retelling these games.  Dan and Joe did a good job already and I don’t have a lot to add.  I was disappointed, maybe as disappointed as I’d ever been for a Husky game and that’s saying a lot.  For the record, I still see the Huskies making it to a bowl and that game did not define Locker’s career.  But dang, that second half was hard to watch.

That was the final straw, really.  After that and my college fantasy team laying an embarrassing 51 points that day, I took the rest of the night off from sports.  I went to a concert and had the best night I’d had in quite some time.  I casually followed the Seahawks the next day but I couldn’t get into it.  My vacation from sports was still on through Sunday and it decided to make it a long weekend and last through Monday and Tuesday, too.

Five months of watching terrible baseball combined with a terrible weekend of football did me in.  Today, I started following the Tacoma Rainiers championship game online.  When I turned on the gameday feed I saw Tacoma was down 12-3 so, I turned it off and played guitar.  The vacation continues for at least another day.

So, forgive me for not taking a look around the Pac-10 this week.  I’m sorry for not writing my thoughts on the Husky game or on what the next step is.  I’ll get around to that later but I’m not ready to dive in quite yet.  The Mariners will get a little more interesting tomorrow when they call up more players from Tacoma.  The Seahawks play at home this weekend so they have a much better chance.  And the Huskies play again and I can’t help but write about them, as you’ve probably noticed.  Things will get better, but for now I’ve caught Sports Overload and the syndrome is sticking around for another day or two.

I did see Ichiro went 4-4 tonight, that makes me smile.  Shame on you for ever thinking he might not get to 200 hits this season.

Thanks for reading a piece that tells you nothing informative!

Perception vs. Reality

3 games into the 2010 Huskies season, I am not ready to say this team is destined for a Mariner-esque flop, but the similarities are there; year 2 of the new regime, Locker is back (kind of like the Cliff Lee acquisition), and expectations are high following a promising first year. Now that Washington is 1-2 and headed to USC in 2 weeks, the Seattle sports fan in me can’t help but think of what became of the M’s this year. Following Saturday’s debacle, it occurred to me that Nebraska may have exposed our true colors. Whether the Huskies rally around this “reality check” remains to be seen, but I’m wondering if my perception of this team, and Jake Locker, may be a bit off. Should 6-6 be the realistic goal in year 2 of the Sark era? Will Jake ever reach his potential while at UW? Is the defense any better? Through 3 weeks, these are questions I am asking.

When you follow a team closely in sports, perception and reality tend to blur. It’s what being a homer is all about; You view your own higher than others do. Following the Huskies closely like I do, of course I am inclined to drink the Kool-Aid. Ask me in August and I’d say our wide receivers are a superb group, that our coaching is top notch, our quarterback is the best in the nation, and our secondary is solid. Maybe some of this is true, maybe it isn’t. One thing is certain, perception and reality often differ.

When it comes to Jake Locker, I love the guy. Heck, my dog is named after him. I love that he picked UW over the likes of USC, that he stuck through these hard times, and that he came back for his senior season. I love his humility, his grit, and leadership. I will love Jake at the next level, and will cheer for him no matter what team he plays for. He is a martyr for Husky nation. But my perception of Jake as the best quarterback in the nation may not be reality. Heck, he may not even be a top 3 QB in his conference.

Is Jake better today than say, Kellen Moore? Comparing the two is tough given the talent that surrounds them, and the system they each play in. We know Locker has sky high potential, but the reality is he will probably not reach his peak in college, whereas a player like Kellen Moore most likely will. Jake will be drafted high because of his potential in 5 years, not for what he accomplishes in college. Some players are perfect for the college game (i.e. Eric Crouch, Kellen Moore, Jason White), but not a fit for the NFL, for various reasons. Jake is definitely not one of these players, but at the given time, Moore may be the better quarterback. One bad week should not make or break a player’s image, but it makes you wonder what the reality is.

All this to say, the hype that surrounded this team has taken a hit, and the image of what this team can actually accomplish is gaining clarity. If UW gets blown out at USC and Locker has another 4-20 type game, the bandwagon will have some open seats, similar to Safeco Field by about the middle of June. The jury is still out on this season, and on Jake Locker as a collegiate quarterback, but I’m starting to doubt that we will see massive improvement like we did last year out of this team, and Jake Locker.

Mitch Levy’s Game Tweets

Mitch Levy, from Sports Radio 950 KJR…

Like it or not, having the worst kick coverage team in major college football is plain and simply a reflection of the coaching staff.

I don’t think Nick Holt has done as good a job in his first year and a quarter as everyone else does. Def should be better than it is.

Nebraska drive to make it 28-14 was the most telling. 8 consecutive running plays right up middle. No 3rd downs. Blew UW’s interior def away.

Wide Receivers not as good as I originally thought. Against NFL caliber DB’s, no separation. Didn’t help Jake out.

Think #10 did a lot more than kill his Heisman chances. I think he clearly hurt his draft stock. He’ll be dropping down ‘big boards’ monday.

What was the freshman Ducre doing on 3rd and 14?
What was Desmond Trufant doing on 3rd and 16?
What was Quentin Richardson doing on Nebraska’s 2nd play from scrimmage?
What was Nate Williams doing on 1st play of 2nd half?

I don’t think I am as pessimistic as Mitch is, but I respect his opinion because he is not a homer and usually tells things how it is. I agree with his game tweets from watching Saturday’s game, although I am not heartbroken to get pumbled by an obviously superior Nebraska team. In fact, the BYU game still stings for me more than this loss. Saturday’s loss was just 1 game out of 12, and while it sucked to lose in the 2008 fashion that we did, it at least opened our eyes to what may actually be a realistic goal from this team. I will post more on this “reality check” later!
