The Mariners Obvious Moves

Note- I started writing this over a week ago, but I don’t think anything has happened since then to change anything.  Consider it an indirect response to Joe’s earlier payroll post, although I didn’t originally intend it that way.

Coming into the offseason, everyone agreed that improving the Mariners to the point of playoff contention was a long shot.  Crazy things happen, and Jack Zduriencik has done crazy things before, but to improve the team that much with a very limited budget didn’t look like it would be in the cards.

What was apparent was moves that could be made.  Coming into the offseason, here’s what I would have laid out as the obvious moves I would look at if I were in Jack’s spot:

  • Find a DH with some power
  • Look hard for an upgrade at catcher
  • Find a middle infielder who could start at second and then shift to short when Dustin Ackley is ready or Jack Wilson gets injured
  • Find a right-handed bat who could platoon with Michael Saunders and ideally play some first base if needed
  • Find a starting pitcher who could be counted on to throw a lot of decent innings
  • Upgrade the bullpen Continue reading

Danny Shelton Commits!

As if this week couldn’t get any better, news is coming down that Danny Shelton, the top uncommitted player in Washington, has committed to the Huskies.  He’s a defensive tackle and is rated as a 3 or 4 star, depending on which service you look at.  This news came shortly after the basketball team beat UCLA to give them a California sweep.  I can’t remember a better sports week.

Wow

It’s a good day to be a Dawg.  More on the game later, but what a night and this celebration deserves to break the “24 hour rule”.  Wear your purple, and hold your head high tonight and tomorrow.  Go Dawgs!

Huskies Win in L.A.

The UW basketball team got a huge win against USC tonight to open Pac-10 play.  Here’s Percy Allen’s wrap-up of the game.

This win is significant for the Huskies to get the road monkey off their back and show that they can win tough, grind-it-out games.  It wasn’t pretty, but the Huskies won against a good Trojan team and against the refs.

Now, on to the Holiday Bowl!

Huskies to Holiday Bowl

If you haven’t heard by now, the Huskies will have a rematch against Nebraska on December 30th in the Holiday Bowl.  We’ll have more on this later!  It’s awesome that I’m able to post this.

Chai Picks UW!

Chai, an Asian elephant at Woodland Park Zoo, goes for apples in the Huskies-wrapped box, marking her pick for the Apple Cup

I’ll take Chai’s analysis over any other sound argument. She offers a solid, unbiased opinion. Here’s to hoping she’s right.

Blake Griffin. Dunkmaster.

I am a huge fan of the slam dunk. I love seeing hoopsters throw down in games over helpless opponents. I’m not a fan of the slam dunk contest because the dunks are contrived and for show. (Old school contests with MJ and Dominique are sweet, I like those…). Dunks in games are legit because they simply happen. No script, just instinct. Blake Griffin has major instinct. I have never seen someone dunk like him. He jumps and slams with such ease, it doesn’t seem real. The video below is from ONE GAME alone last week. Griffin singlehandedly posterized the Knicks. The three dunks you will watch are beyond epic. They are legendary. They bring back memories of my all time favorite dunker, Shawn Kemp. Raw, vicious, without regard for his opponents feelings. I love it. Enjoy.
