If I Were Jack Z

Happy Free Agency! I am a sucker for hot stove talk, MLB trade rumors, and general off season gossip. I get the feeling this could be an eventful winter for the M’s, and I am thankful that Jack Z will be calling the shots once again. That being said, I thought I would speculate on some potential moves the M’s could make over the next few months, and in doing, I’ve created my off season plan.

Before delving into the plan, let’s remember where the M’s are in, and the state of the franchise. 2012 will be the 4th year of Jack Zduriencik’s regime in Seattle. He inherited a major rebuilding project, no doubt about it. Top to bottom, the organization was a mess. For 3 years, Jack has concentrated on bulking up the farm, adding depth, and above all, talent. It took a couple years to shed the dead weight—bad contacts, bad draft picks, bad hires, and despite a couple setbacks (Chone), most fans understand the path the organization is on. It’s not as though losses don’t matter, but the record is not as important as the master plan, and Jack has not deviated from building the whole system, which is really the only way to sustain success. Even the Yankees and Red Sox, for all the money they throw around, build from within as good as anyone, and this has been Jack’s focus all along.

In 2012, wins and losses will matter. The grace period is gone, and the M’s had better start producing. A .500 record should be a reasonable goal, so considering the 2011 M’s won 67 games, where does Jack find an additional 14 wins this off season?

Let’s assume the M’s payroll is set at $90-95 million, which is on par for the past 3 years. $60 million is already guaranteed for Felix, Ichiro, Guti, Ryan, Ackley, Figgins, and Olivo, so Jack will have about $30 million to fill out the roster. Next, Jack will need to address the M’s 6 arbitration eligible players: Kelley, Vargas, Aardsma, L-Rodriguez, and League. If I were Jack, I’d non-tender Aardsma, but keep the others, for what will cost about $10 million total. Some would prefer to keep Aardsma, and trade League, but the money is virtually even between the two, and I think you need to keep one. League was an all-star closer, despite his brain lapses, so unless the trade market is high for a guy like League, I’d hang onto him. Finally, another $5 million will be tied up in about 10 spots, the kids like Smoak, Carp, Seager, and most of the young relievers who all make about $450,000. With the remaining $15-20 million, and still a few holes to fill, here’s the roster I would aim to assemble (click to enlarge).

The Walden Rant

If you have not yet heard the interview Ian Furness had with Jim Walden (WSU color man) yesterday, well, you missed out. I happened to hear it live, and almost pulled over for fear that I would cause an accident on the road. The words coming out of Walden’s mouth, during his 10 minutes of continuous ranting, were beyond ignorant. He made so many outlandish comments, it was hard to keep up, and my mind was left swirling. Jim Walden is kind of the cougar equivelant to Dick Baird, so this would be like Baird going on a station in Spokane, and losing his mind. In a nutshell, Walden is up in arms over the idea of Paul Wulff being fired, and goes as far as to say anyone who thinks otherwise is stupid. Coug Center with SB Nation does a terrific job summarizing the interview. Check it out, laugh a little, then be glad you are a Dawg!

Jim Walden Wants To Know: ‘Why Do I Have To Keep Explaining To The Stupid?’

Another Milestone

I noticed today that we’ve surpassed 13,000 views on this, the most viewed blog on the internet (at least, of those blogs that have good guys in the name). In light of this feat, on behalf of the good guys, I want to extend our thanks to the 6 of you that have refreshed our homepage 100x a day, in order to make us feel loved. Your thoughtfulness does not go unnoticed.

In addition, there have been some rather intriguing searches that have lead readers to our blog. If you are the guy that looked up, “good would you rathers for guys,” “probability of beating a team 3 times in one season,” “how to not stalk a guy,” “my brother is a good guy,” “m and m commercials in 2011,” or my favorite, “fantastico! liddi launching salamis,” we sincerely hope you found what you were looking for.

We are your one stop shop for answers to these difficult quandaries. Stay tuned for more absurdly intelligent content, spot on predictions, and solutions to America’s debt crisis. The Good Guys won’t let you down.

The 12th Ram

St. Louis trying to coin the “12th Ram” is ridiculous on its own, but the campaign video that lays out the “rules” is beyond words. I honestly don’t know how to digest this video you are about to see. At first, you think it is a joke, and then you realize it is real. Every Rams fan should punch themselves today.

Luck Power Rankings

Qualifiers: Must suck, Must need a franchise QB, Must have Luck!

1- Cleveland 0-1
The Browns are improved, but also seem to find ways to lose. The AFC North is no cakewalk either.

2- Seattle 0-1
Against San Fran the defense was good, the offense was bad, and special teams was ugly. Still think a couple home wins are likely, especially against weak division foes.

3- Cincinnati 1-0
Will the Bengals have a top 10 pick? Will the sun rise tomorrow? The answer is yes to both.

4- Kansas City 0-1
Did not expect KC to be bad following a 10-6 season, but a tough schedule + injuries + regression is a bad combination

5- Denver 0-1
Te-bow! Te-bow! Te-bow! That sums it up.

6- Buffalo 1-0
A week 1 win was unexpected, the blowout fashion was shocking. Still seem destined for a top 5 pick as usual.

7- Indianapolis 0-1
As long as Manning is out, Indy is on this list. Could they pull a San Antonio Spurs and go from Manning to Luck, ala Robinson to Duncan?

8- San Francisco 1-0
Beating the Hawks does not help their case, 1-2 more wins should eliminate the 9ers and Harbaugh’s dream of coaching his college bf

9- Miami 0-1
If the strength of the Dolphins is their defense, Miami could be in real trouble after giving up 600 yards to the Pats. The Henne led offense played better than expected, but AFC East is brutal.

10- Minnesota 0-1
39 pass yards for McNabb. Things could get ugly quickly, Ponder may be called upon sooner than later.

History Repeating Itself?

In 1988, the Huskies finished 6-5, narrowly missing a bowl game. The following season, Washington improved to 8-4 and capped the season with a win in the Freedom Bowl against the Florida Gators. Expectations were high for the 1990 team, but the momentum from the Freedom Bowl quickly deflated when Washington narrowly beat lowly San Jose State in the opener, 20-17. Sound familiar so far? In week 2, the Dawgs beat a dismal Purdue team, 20-14. UW then rolled through the Pac 10, finished 10-2, and won the Rose Bowl. The next year was a perfect season, and a national championship.

I’m not saying the Huskies are about to put together a 10-2 Rose Bowl campaign, followed by a perfect season. But the similarities are there when comparing the ’88-89 team to the ’09-10 version. I would bet the fan base had a similar vibe following the close win against SJSU to open 1990. But things can change quick in college football, as evidenced by an 0-12 Husky team becoming Holiday Bowl Champs 24 months later.

The Huskies are on the rise, even a non-homer would agree with this, and in the next year or two, some special things may happen at UW. Our team is 1-0, and riding the 6th longest win streak in college football. It’s time to bury the Eastern game, and pray T’Amu turns into Emtman.

Osweiler’s Catastrophic Charlie Horse

I love this description, the exaggeration is terrific.

Later in the quarter, Osweiler hit Aaron Plfugrad on the right end of the endzone, bringing the score to 38-0. During the throw, Osweiler’s right leg seized up and appeared to swing around to the front of his body, and Osweiler collapsed.

Teammates grabbed his leg and attempted to stabilize it, which gives us the opinion that Osweiler experienced a rather severe charley horse on the play.
