Who’s Gonna Play?

I’m tired of writing and reading about the Mariners, so here’s some ridiculously early speculation on what true freshman might play for the Huskies this year.  The Huskies depth is steadily improving, but they still have plenty of places where true freshman have excellent opportunities to play, and in some cases they’re even being counted on.  I have no inside information, and this could change greatly as camp goes on and some players pick up on the playbook more quickly, but, barring injury, here’s my projection of the guys to watch.

Going To Play

Deontae Cooper- RB  Right now, Cooper sounds like he’s sharing the first backup spot with Johri Fogerson.  I’ll be curious to see if Fogerson gets more carries this year, or if he stays in the third down pass-catching role.  If his role is the same, expect Cooper to get a ton of carries.

Josh Shirley- DE/LB  The late addition has maybe the best chance to make an impact as the speed rusher this team is lacking.  Watch the linebacker competition.  If one of the veterans doesn’t take the spot, Shirley might get semi-regular time there.  If not, he’ll probably start as a pass rushing specialist. Countdown to Camp: Schedule Part 2

Camp is starting!  The news of the day is obviously Wak getting fired but we’ll get to that later.  On to the second half of the Husky schedule!

@ Arizona

It’s easy to forget how close Arizona was to playing in the Rose Bowl last year.  If it weren’t for a ball bouncing off a receivers foot at Montlake and a last second touchdown by Oregon, Arizona would have been playing Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.  With that being said, Arizona should take a step back this year.  The offense should be okay.  They return their quarterback and running, Nick Foles and Nic Grigsby.  They also return most of a very good offensive line.  The defense is where they run into problems.  They lost 7 starters and have to totally rebuild at the linebacker spot.  Stoops is a pretty good defensive coach though.  Arizona could be a lot better than what people are saying.

Stanford

We all know what the Cardinal lost, Toby Gerhart was one of the best running backs the Pac-10 has seen.  You can’t replace a player like that.  They still have a good team though.  Andrew Luck is good, I don’t know if he’s as good as everyone says but he is good.  Their receivers are very solid and their offensive line might be the best in the Pac-10.  The defense is what stopped Stanford from winning the Pac-10 last year and it must improve if they’re going to be a good team this year.  They switched to a 3-4 defense this spring and we’ll see the results that yields.  If the defense improves Stanford could win the Pac-10…

@ Oregon

Yeah, Oregon will probably be good.  They return the most and if the defense improves there’s not much reason to think they won’t be the best team in the Pac-10.  I don’t feel like talking about how good the Ducks could be so let me point out how tough it will be to replace Masoli.  He was easily the best quarterback in the Pac-10 last year.  In the UCLA game that he was injured for, Nate Costa couldn’t get the offense to score against one of the worst defenses in the conference.  Costa doesn’t scare me at all.  Thomas is more of a threat but that offense took 3 years for Dixon to master.  It took about 2 years for Masoli to truly master.  I’m not saying the Ducks won’t be good but they might be in more trouble than what people are saying.

UCLA

This game should be fun!  Jake and Mason’s last home game, a Thursday night game, and national TV should make for a fn environment.  Much like Arizona State, we shouldn’t have lost to UCLA last year and we shouldn’t this year.  The Bruins should be improved but they have quite a few holes on the lines and still have questions about whether Kevin Prince can be a good Pac-10 quarterback.  I think he can be but he was inconsistent last year.  UCLA does have a pretty good secondary but the rest of the front 7 on defense has a few holes.  UCLA has talent but can they put it together?

@ Cal

Cal generally has the talent and will again this season.  Hopefully they once again have their late-season lapse against the Dawgs.  The Bears return most of an offense that under-achieved last year.  Cal has to fill some holes in the secondary but the rest of the defense looks okay.  Cal should be good again this year, as usual.  Not good enough to win the Pac-10 but still pretty solid.

@ WSU

We should not lose this game.  Truthfully, I think Montana St. might beat the Cougars.  Jeff Tuel is halfway decent if he doesn’t get injured by this point in the season.  James Montgomery is okay but I don’t know if he’ll be able to make it all the way back from an injury.  The receivers are okay.  The rest of the team is pretty awful and I don’t see a lot of hope in them winning more than one or two games.  In positive news for WSU fans, this should be Paul Wulff’s last game as the Cougar’s coach.

Countdown to Camp: Schedule Part One

We’re 2 days away from Fall Camp starting.  Technically, the players start tomorrow but the media and fans don’t have access until Monday.  The first week of practices will be mostly non-contact workouts until the weekend.  It will be great to be able to read some actual football news instead of rumors of Wak getting fired.

The Huskies have consistently had one of the toughest football schedules in the nation in the past decade and that doesn’t change this year.  Today, I wanted to do a quick run-down of the schedule with a little preview of the teams.  We’ll be sure to have a more complete analysis of opponents in the week before games.  Here we go!

@ BYU
The season opener is against a rebuilding team in Provo.  I would feel a lot more confident about this game if it wasn’t the season opener but at this point we have to believe that Sark will have the team ready.  BYU has lost their quarterback, leading rusher, all 3 starting linebackers and a few other players.  They do return most of a strong offensive line.  Mendenhall is a great coach and BYU always seems like a force these days.  I’d feel much better about this game if it was swapped with the Syracuse one.  But, here’s to hoping they start Jake Heaps and we come to dominate.  This one’s a toss up right now in my mind.

Syracuse
It was 5 years ago that Jake Locker debuted in Syracuse, New York.  He ran all over and the Huskies looked better than they had in a couple years.  No need to look back at much history though.  The Syracuse program has been struggling for the better part of a decade now.  They did show some signs of life last year though.  They return 18 starters from a group that went 4-8 last season.  They do have to replace their quarterback and playing your first road game at Husky Stadium is not an easy task.  This should be a victory, although it may not be as easy as some people think.  This is a possible trap game.

Nebraska
This could be awesome.  If the Dawgs start 2-0, there could be many possibilities for this game.  College Gameday would most likely be here.  The Huskies might wear black jerseys for the first time.  It could be the game that would vault them into the top 15 in the nation.  The problem is that Nebraska is good.  Really good.  They do have holes at quarterback and center but they have some talented guys at those spots with a litle experience already.  Their defense was the strength last year and will be again.  Although the Cornhuskers lost 4 of their 5 top tacklers, there’s plenty of talent.  It’s to our advantage to get them early in the season.  It’s a really interesting match-up; our explosive offense vs. their dominating defense.  Here’s to hoping both teams are 2-0 going into the game and we get a memorable game.

@USC
Let Pac-10 play begin!  And what a tough way to start it.  USC is almost as talented as they’ve ever been, although they don’t have as much depth.  They have more talent than the Huskies but that doesn’t always matter, as we saw last year with USC.  The Trojans have to replace their secondary and have some offensive line depth issues, but everywhere else looks pretty solid.  This could be a tough one to watch, but you never know.  We can play with them.

ASU
We shouldn’t have lost this game last year and we should win this year.  The Sun Devils offense shouldn’t be very good.  They were bad last year and there’s not much reason to expect a dramatic improvement.  The defense is another story.  Led by Vontaze Burfict, the defense is one of the Pac-10’s best.  They did lose 6 starters on that side of the ball but they have a solid core unit and won’t be a push over.  With that being said, this looks to be one of the easier games on the schedule.

Oregon State
OSU always seems to be good now and this year looks no different.  The key to their season is replacing Sean Canfield at quarterback.  He was great last year and will be tough to replace.  Fortunately for the Beavs, they have 4 starters back on the O-line along with the Rodgers’ brothers to make things easier for the new quarterback.  Their defense is always over-achieving and should be strong this year.  They have some holes at linebacker but all the other spots look to be sured up.  This will be a tough game, as usual.

I’ll be back with the rest of the schedule tomorrow.  Thanks for reading.  Bruce Chen is shutting down the Mariners and I wish I could say I was surprised.  Believe big!

Countdown to Camp: Press Conference Notes

4 days!  Sark had his season opening press conference today which didn’t give off a whole lot of news.  Here were a few things that stuck out to me.

  • Sark said that starting tight end, Chris Izbicki, had the best off-season of anyone.  This is great news if true.  It’s impossible to know what Izbicki did his first two years here because he was in Willingham’s doghouse.  Maybe he worked hard, maybe he didn’t.  But, now we have proof that he’s making big strides and wants to help the team win ball games.  Chris will play a big role on this team and if he meets his initial potential (a 4-star recruit coming out of high school) he will be another weapon in this high-powered offense.
  • Brent Williams and John Timu will gray-shirt this year.  Timu is not a surprise but Williams is.  I thought Williams would come in and redshirt but he also had the possibility of playing because of the lack of depth.  Maybe this move shows that Sark has faith that the previously injured defensive ends (Aldrich and Thompson) are fine.  Maybe I’m reading too much into it.
  • Sark stated that he thinks Jake should be above a 65% completion percentage and have a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio.  If both of those things happen, I think the Huskies will win 9 games or more.  Those are some lofty goals but if anyone could get to them, Montlake Jake would be the guy to do it.
  • He gave the team a clean bill of health.  Justin Glenn will be monitored very closely with an ankle issue but the rest of the team is very healthy heading into camp.
  • The Huskies announced they have 2 walk-on quarterbacks that were added to their roster.  I won’t pretend like I know a thing  about either of them but they both put up some good high school numbers.  They are much needed extra bodies at that position.
  • Speaking of extra bodies, the Huskies reportedly have 81 scholarship players on the active roster (I thought it would be 78 or 79 and I’m not sure where I’m off) and have 23 walk-ons.  That’s 104 players if you don’t feel like doing the addition.  The NCAA limit is 105.
  • Josh Shirley will start out at defensive end.  Although this is where he’ll start, I think he’ll get a good look at the open linebacker position also.
  • Perhaps the biggest news of the day were the listed weights of players.  Ivan Lewis is one crazy dude and our players seem to be getting in the shape that the coaches want them to be in.  Here are a few of the biggest increases/decreases (straight from Condotta’s blog):
RB Demetrius Bronson was 206, now 221
DE Talia Critchon was 229, now 246
    DT Alameda Ta’amu was 348, now 330
DT Semisi Tokolahi was 340, now 298
The theme of this was the big defensive lineman losing some weight while the younger guys at other positions put on some weight.  Bronson is obviously embracing the ‘big back’ role that he’ll have with the team.  It’s great to see Critchon up some so he won’t get man-handled this year.  Ta’amu looks like a different person, according to Sark.  Tokolahi lost 42 lbs.  That’s crazy.  I think he’ll be in a little bit better playing shape now.

I realize that now it’s only 3 days until camp now but I just got back to Yakima after a terrible Mariner game.  Poor Felix, he deserves better.  I’ll be back with more later today!

Countdown to Camp: Recruiting

5 days until camp!  Today, we’ll look at some of the 2011 recruits who have committed and might commit to play football at Washington.  Sark and staff have had a great start to this class and it has potential to get a way better.  Let’s take a look at some players.

Verbal Commits (as  reported by Scout.com):

Jarett Finau- TE (Offered by Arizona, BYU, Hawaii, Utah State, and WSU)
Scott Lawyer- OLB
Josh Perkins- WR (Offered by Minnesota, New Mexico St., San Diego St., San Jose St.)
Jamaal Jones- WR (Offered by Idaho and WSU)
Connor Cree- DE (Offered by ASU, Boise St., Colorado St., Uconn, Idaho, WSU, Wyoming)
Matthew Lyons- OLB
Dexter Charles- OT (Offered by Arizona and WSU)
Taniela Tupou- DE (Offered by BYU and WSU)
Kameron Jackson- CB (Offered by Boise St. and WSU)
Aubrey Coleman- DE (Offered by ASU)
Maataua Brown- DT
Elijhaa Penny- FB (Offered by UNLV)
Evan Zeger- S (Offered by ASU, BYU, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, UCLA, UNLV, WSU)

Note: Some offers don’t get recorded by Scout.  Some people might have more offers that are not on here.  These recruits will also be getting more offers as the year goes on.

There’s not a ton to say about these guys, as many of them haven’t been scouted by the big sites (rivals and scout).  One of the best things about this list is the group of guys that are from Washington.  There are 5 guys from Washington as Sark continues to put the so-called ‘fence around the state.’  It’s also good to see the amount of defensive lineman on that list.  That is a serious need for the Dawgs.

The Big Three (Plus a few more):

Brett Hundley- QB
Hundley is one of the highest ranked quarterbacks in the nation.  He hails from Arizona and is down to two schools, UW and UCLA.  Hundley has great size (6-4, 217) and good mobility (4.65 40-time).  UCLA has received a committment from a quarterback a few weeks ago so that could be a good sign for us.  This is one of the first times Neuheisel and Sark have gone toe-to-toe for a great recruit.  Except for Josh Shirley.  Hmm… That’s weird.  I have a good feeling about our chances with Hundley.

Kasen Williams- WR
Kasen is rated as the best receiver recruit on the west coast by most sources.  He has narrowed his list to UW, Cal, Notre Dame, LSU, and Florida.  That is a big-time list.  Williams goes to Skyline and both his parents went to U-Dub.  My guess is that he ends up a Husky.  Here’s to hoping!

Austin Seferian-Jenkins- TE
Jenkins might be the most coveted of these three and he might be the hardest to get.  Jenkins if from Gig Harbor and is down to Texas and Washington (although he’s said Florida and Alabama are in the mix also).  He’s visiting Texas this week and we’ll know his decision on August 16th.  Condotta thinks he’s a UW lean and he usually knows best when it comes to all things Husky.  I’m not so sure this time but I hope so!

Brendon Bigelow- RB
Bigelow is one of the best running backs on the west coast and is actually listed as a commit to UW.  Unfortunately, he’s going to continue to look around.  Washington was the first school to offer, he jumped on that chance and now is having second thoughts, more or less.  He has spent a ton of time at California lately and I would not be surprised to see him end up there.  This whole situation reminds of Keanon Lowe with Oregon last year.  That’s not good news.

DeAnthony Thomas- CB
Here’s a quote by scout Scott Kennedy about Thomas, “The only player I’ve ever said that could legitimately be 5-Stars at four different positions, RB, S, CB, WR. The only thing that keeps Thomas from being the #1 prospect in the country is that he’s on the small side. But his combination of raw speed, change of direction, balance, and natural athleticism is at the top of the heap. His long-term future may best be served at corner where his size isn’t a liability.”  Unfortunately, Thomas is a soft commit to USC (like Bigelow is to us) and looks to be headed there.  He is visiting for the Nebraska game and that gives us a little hope.

It’d be awesome if 3 of these 5 guys committed.  If 4 of 5 did then the Dawgs might have a top 5 class in the nation.  This class is off to a great start and if a few things break the right way this could be something special.  Go get ’em Sark!

Countdown to Camp: The Best Games

The Huskies will take the field for the start of Fall Camp in just six days!  Today, the subject of our Countdown to Camp is the most memorable home games.  I haven’t missed a Husky home game in roughly 7 years but that doesn’t leave me with a ton of memorable games.  Fortunately, there’s enough for a blog post.  Let’s get rockin!  (These are in no particular order).

2003:  Huskies-42 Ducks-10

This game has always stuck with me.  The Dawgs were in the midst of a very strange season.  It was Neuheisel’s last and his team was underachieving.  Coming into the game, the Ducks players had plenty to say in the papers.  They talked about winning and then dancing on our W after the game as the Huskies walked off the field.  It was a night game at Husky Stadium, which was more of a rarity back then.  The first half was pretty close and starter Cody Pickett, was hurt.  But then Casey Paus came in wiped the Ducks off the field.  Looking back, the thought of Casey Paus beating the Ducks is one of the funnier things I can think of.  The atmosphere turned into one big party; the guy standing behind us kept his “Ducks suck!” chant going late into the night.  Along with the game being awesome, the Duck’s band seemed to be wearing bike helmets and did one of the weirdest halftime shows I’ve ever seen.  Although, you could hardly hear them over all the boos.  We haven’t beat the Ducks since this game and this has been our biggest blow out of an opponent until beating Cal by the same amount last year.

2000:  Huskies-34 Miami-29

This game would beat out any other if I had been a little bit older.  I can’t remember a ton from this game but I do remember how loud it was.  When Husky Stadium gets really loud, it starts to shake.  This is the first time I remember this happening at  a game I went to.  Also, I remember Miami fans chanting “Santana!” (for receiver Santana Moss) as he went out to return his first punt.  He fumbled that punt return and the Dawgs went on to win.  Miami’s hail mary was swatted down at the end and the band raced on to the field while playing ‘Celebrate’.  This game should be on ESPN Classic more often.

2003:  Huskies-27 Cougars-19

The Huskies upset the Cougars once again in 2003.  This victory came with the famous ‘Pickett to Williams’ play.  Corey Williams didn’t do much else in his career but he’ll always have that play.  The stadium was shaking as the Dawgs went on to win.

2000:  Huskies-33 Beavers-30

This is the game that gave the Huskies their eventual Pac-10 title.  The Oregon State kicker missed a field goal with no time left and the Huskies went on to victory.  No one knew how critical this game was until down the road.

2009: Huskies-16 USC-13; Huskies-36 Arizona-33

I put these two together because you all know what happened.  They were both miracles.  The Dawgs beat the third ranked team in the nation one week after snapping their losing streak.  I rushed the field and stood next to men much older than I who had tears rolling down their cheeks.  It was a sort of redemption for the past 6 seasons of ineptitude.
Then the Mason Foster interception.  That was a miracle and a game that reminded me of the 2001 Michigan game.

2009:  Huskies-30 Cougars-0; Huskies-42 Cal-10

These games weren’t very high on the dramatic scale and wouldn’t be on the list if they weren’t the last ones the Dawgs had played.  But, think about how crucial these games could be in Husky history if they go on to better things this year.  These could have been the games that made Jake stay for his senior season.  These could be the games that jump-start an offense with loads of potential.  If the Huskies return to prominence these could be the games that were the turning point.  If that’s the case, then I’d say these were as memorable as anything.

Countdown to Camp: My Favorite Husky

We are only a week away from fall camp starting for the Huskies.  This is the most anticipated year of Husky football since the early  2000’s and the excitement will only grow as the season gets closer.  Because the Mariners are tough to watch, read, and write about it, I’m going to go into a countdown here on the blog and have a new topic each day.  John Berkowitz over at UW Dawg Pound covered some of these topics in a series he did a couple of weeks ago.  Go check his blog out, he does a great job.

Today the topic, or question, is who is your favorite Husky of all time?  Post your answer and thoughts in the comments section.

Growing up a little later than the rest of the Good Guys, I missed out on the ‘golden years’ of Husky football.  Of course, they might have been a little young to remember the National Championship in ’91 but they caught way more of the winning season streak than I did.  With that being said, it wouldn’t surprise me if we all had the same favorite Husky, Marques Tuiasosopo.

I was always a Husky fan growing up but Tui solidified a lifetime of fandom.  Tui made it cool for me to say, “Let’s run the option” in backyard football games with my friends.  I still do that.  Tui led the Huskies to an unforgettable season and Rose Bowl victory in 2000-2001.  Every game seemed to come down to the wire and it was Marques bringing us the victory.  First, it was Miami, then Oregon State, then Stanford.  The dramatic victories kept coming.  He also killed the Cougars 51-3 in his final Apple Cup.

I had a basketball game the day that Tui had his signature performance, a 300 yard passing, 200 yard rushing game.  I’m still upset about that.

Tui was tough, a leader, and was poised.  He was everything you could want in a college quarterback.  Now, he’s back working as an assistant trainer at the U and it’s common to see him catching passes from the quarterbacks during drills.  I imagine he’ll move on to coach somewhere soon but maybe he’ll get to see Jake Locker deliver a season like he had first.

Honorable Mention:

Reggie Williams- He’s had problems since he left but from his very first home game he amazed me.  He’s one of the best receivers I’ve seen live.

Corey Dillon-  The first Husky game I really remember being at was the game where Dillon went off on San Jose State in the first quarter.  I remember it pouring rain and him running, that’s about it.

Sonny Sixkiller- Before my time, but Sonny has always been one of my dad’s favorite Huskies and that has rubbed off on me the more I learn about Sixkiller.

Juan Garcia- He was from my hometown and was a true Husky.  He played through 6 of the worst years of Husky football ever, but he played hard.  He surpassed the NFL to stay for a 6th season and ended up getting hurt in the spring which kept him from getting close to his potential.  He played through the injury and gave his team all he could in an age where the rest of the team and coaching staff didn’t seem to care a whole lot.  He was never a star but he was a real Husky.

Jake Locker/Mason Foster- Their stories aren’t finished yet but they’ve made their way up my list.

Thoughts on Pac-10 Media Day

If you hadn’t heard, Pac-10 Media Day was yesterday which means the release of the media poll.  This is how the media picked (via Bob Condotta’s blog):

1, Oregon (15), 314
2, USC (12), 311
3, Oregon State (3), 262
4, Stanford (1), 233
5, Arizona (2), 222
6, Washington (1), 209
7, Cal, 175
8, UCLA (1), 134
9, Arizona State 81
10, Washington State 39

This is pretty close to what I expected.  Of course, these things don’t matter at all but it does mean that football season is getting a little bit closer.  In recent weeks I had talked myself into thinking that UW could win the Pac-10.  For reasons that I’ll save for another day, I still think they can but this poll gives me a little dose of reality.  Most of these writers know more about these teams than I do and they are more likely to pick it correctly than I am.  I’m sure the Good Guys will have Pac-10 predictions up as the season draws near so I’ll save mine for them.

Maybe the biggest news of the day, as far as Husky fans are concerned, was the retirement of Alvin Logan.  Logan had a chance at being a starting linebacker on the team but suffered from knee problems that ended his career.  Watching him in the spring, I thought he was perfectly capable of doing a fine job at that spot.  With his retirement the job comes down to two people in my mind: Victor Aiyewa and Josh Shirley.  The coaches may say other players are in the mix but I think those are the ones to watch during camp.  We wish the best of luck to Alvin Logan as his life moves on.

A few more notes after the jump.  Continue reading
